Some Updates - Technical and Philosophical

February 26th, 2006 at 7:44PM in updates and thnlnk

I increased the length of the title input field; it looks like before people were getting cut off. But I don't want it to be too long--that kind of defeats the purpose. Anyways, people should try to be concise in their descriptions--don't "eschew brevity."

I added some more logging on the back-end.

I thought about adding (1) a list of random, recent ThnLnks, and (2) a tag cloud based upon titles, but I don't want the home page to be too messy. I also considered adding more explanatory text, but for right now I trust people to just try it out and see what happens.

While tag clouds may give Thnlnk users the voyeuristic pleasure of peeking into the heads of other Thnlnk users, the utility of Thnlnk resides primarily in its function and ease-of-use. I visit Thnlnk because I want to take my www.seldow.com/%&&&456--silly/long/link%%H5 and make it http://thnlnk.com/seldow/folksonomy/mvX . I know it's mine and I know it's about folksonomy--wunderbar! I wrestle with the idea of streamlined utility vs. community benefactor. If the goal of Thnlnk is to create and enhance communities--throw in a tag cloud. If the goal is the make cleaner, more intuitive links, keep Thnlnk's head outta the clouds. Either way, Thnlnk kicks tushie.

Great point, Adam. There's always that wrestle between wanting to be all things--and just settling with the one thing you do best. Thanks, man.
